GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL 2022

Working across multiple BBC brands (6 Music, Radio 1, BBC Music, BBC Glastonbury and BBC), I produced a suite of digital-first content for Glastonbury Festival 2022 that built excitement ahead of the event, offered a unique point of view during the event and pushed users to the BBC’s vast on-demand offering after the event. Campaign highlights include…

Client: BBC Pop Hub / Radio 6 Music / BBC iPlayer / BBC Sounds

Billie Eilish

To celebrate global pop icon Billie Eilish becoming Glastonbury’s youngest ever solo headliner, I produced and edited a 90-second profile video that details her prolific rise to stardom. From scripting Jack Saunders’ voiceover to cutting all video footage and animating all graphics, I oversaw the video from inception to delivery. Created initially as a 9x16 vertical video optimised for TikTok and Instagram Reels, I also edited an additional 1x1 square video for other social platforms. The video was shared across the BBC portfolio and generated over 1 million views on owned channels and a further 1 million views on third-party channels (such as Billie Eilish fan pages).

Onsite Content

Across the event weekend, I worked as an onsite producer tasked with capturing talent-led content. From scheduled time with artists at the BBC compound, to off-the-cuff moments around the festival site, I produced over 25 videos that offered our audience a different angle to the regular broadcast. Standout clips include chatting to HAIM about their iconic Pyramid Stage performance, filming Simon Pegg’s hilarious Beatles impressions on the eve of Paul McCartney’s set, and showing Radio 1 artists some absolutely crazy AI creations courtesy of the Dall-E Mini generator. The ‘Four Beatles In Your Mouth’ video with Simon Pegg has over 2.5 million views on Instagram, making it 6 Music’s most viewed video of all time on the platform.

Love Letters

To involve our audience ahead of the festival’s long-awaited return, I created Glastonbury Love Letters - a mechanism for fans to submit their favourite Glasto stories via WhatsApp or email. Promoted through a series of launch posts, I scripted and produced a CTA video that was voiced by Lauren Laverne and used to generate awareness of the campaign. We received over 200 submissions and selected our favourites to create content in the lead up to the event…

A standout submission was from Harry in Bristol who had an unbelievable story to tell. We crossposted the video from the BBC Glastonbury and Radio 1 accounts, reaching over 250k views across platforms. You’ll have to hear it to believe it!

Film Camera Challenge

In order to go even deeper behind the scenes, I created the ‘Glastonbury Film Camera Challenge’ where we gave artists disposable cameras and a list of Glasto-themed challenges for them to photograph whilst they were onsite. We were invited into the world of Easy Life on their Pyramid Stage debut, getting an exclusive look at their set list and a candid backstage moment with none other than Brockhampton’s Kevin Abstract. The result was a 4 slide gallery post that I designed, complete with strips of film and marker pen handwriting. Images were crossposted on Radio 1 and the band’s respective pages.

Illustrator Activity

Finally, to provide us with an arsenal of visual elements to use across the campaign, I commissioned three illustrators to recreate some of Glastonbury’s most iconic scenes ahead of the festival. ‘The Park Stage’ by Anu, ‘The Pyramid Stage’ (and accompanying performer artwork) by Lindsay Fagan and ‘Arcadia’ by James Lacey.
